Giving it another shot. Hopefully it'll go better this time..
First attempt. Too much hair. Face too much monkey like.
Second try. I actually like the proportion of the face.
Today's tries. realized I wanted to make his pose more gorilla like.
(Upright back with hips pulled further back.)
Another try at the son. Getting some ideas.
Will try tomorrow.
Result of gorilla-fying the dad more. Still not simple enough.
I like the monkey face, use it to create contrast of opposites. This will create a stronger separation of the difference between the two characters. Just have them have the same hair or character trait (or both) to connect the characters.
